Extensive and scholarly notations, biographies and essays on the works in addition to a copy of Shakespeare's Will, and the most famous of the verses on Shakespeare including Milton's own first printed work. Fine quill name dated 1869 to the tip of each title page, light surface rubs to the corners and spine edges, gilt design to spines worn, paper clean and white with the odd spot to a couple of plates. Originally published in 7 volumes as the 'Whittingham Edition' this rather unusual full leather set has been rebacked. The second title pages refer to be published in 7 volumes, however, this set is over 14 volumes, because of this the binder has duplicated 7 volumes with two lots of different tools down the 14 spines, with generic titles to all 14. Illustrated title pages to seven volumes, other illustrations throughout the 14 volumes. From the private library of Thomas Valentine Smith with his bookplate to each front paste down. Thomas Valentine Smith inherited Ardtornish House, Morvern, Lochaber from his father, he was a sportsman and a vicarious adventurer and enjoyed entertaining parties of like-minded guests. To this end, he doubled the size of Ardtornish, adding two more towers, numerous service rooms, WC's and bathrooms. Member of the P.B.F.A.
