Sometime handsomely bound in full burgundy morocco, elaborate gilt borders to sides, both covers with a gilt fan at the centre, spine decorated in gilt and with five raised bands, decorative gilt turn-ins, marbled end papers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Royal 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. A study from ancient times into the nineteenth century, Uzanne's work of fans, was part of his wider series of 'books of the boudoir' which was intended to provide a comprehensive history of feminine adornment. His collaboration with the artist Paul Avril creates as Gordon Ray described it 'an elegant pastiche of rococo bookmaking, exactly to the taste of the bibliophiles of his day.' Contains 143 printed pages of text with Avril's designs and decorative borders in a variety of colours to every leaf. Colour bookplate of Bernice Olds Roe. Fine condition book preserved in a cloth dust wrapper with gilt title to the spine. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection. Member of the P.B.F.A.
