T. Picken | W. L. Leitch [John Parker Lawson]

(Book #ID 109015)

Published by Day & Son Lithographers to the Queen, London circa 1850. 1850.

Drawn on stone by T. Picken (illustrator) printed by Day & Son after a drawing by W. L. Leitch. Day & Son became the Queen's most famous early Victorian firm of lithographic printers in London. Paper measures 13'' x 9'' the lithograph being 8'' x 5½''. The hall is in shade, beyond the church tower in sunlight forms the dominant feature of the composition of light and shade. The foreground is full of activity, a man takes charge of two work horses, a cart with double shafts awaits, a boy picks up loaves scattered from his basket, a woman wheels a loaded barrow watched by market women with their wares. All is not strictly business; two soldiers resplendent in regimental kilts and bearskins pass the time fraternising with two market women, urban activity extends into the distance. Closed tear to the left hand white border, crinkles of the paper across the top edge. Member of the P.B.F.A.
