First edition hard back binding in publisher's original blue cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered in orange. Quarto. 10'' x 8¼''. Contains 128 pp with 120 photographs, some full-page, by the Lübeck photographer Wilhelm Castelli, they are reminiscent of the photographs by Albert Renger-Patzsch, here because of the mediaeval subjects especially those in his volume 'Das Chorgestühl von Cappenberg'. And indeed, Castelli was introduced to Renger-Patzsch by the Lübeck museum director and author of the present volume, who himself was an advocate of modern art and photography. His way of working had a lasting influence on the still young photographer. In the first two large German photo exhibitions that Heise organised in Lübeck in 1929 and 1932, photos by Castelli hung next to those by Renger, Emil Otto Hoppé and Hugo Erfurth. His motifs were mainly the architectural and art monuments of Lübeck, and his home town acquired his photographs early on, which still document many of the buildings and works of art in the Hanseatic city that were lost in the destruction of World War II. Castelli also left film documents about Lübeck, including footage of the effects of the air raid on March 29, 1942, the first carpet bombing of a German city by the Royal Air Force. Spine sun faded, light spotting to the end papers and in Very Good condition, no dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A.
