(Book #ID 102073)
Published in Conjunction with The Navy Records Society by Routledge & Kegan Paul, Limited, Broadway House, 68-74 Carter Lane, London First Edition 1958. 1958.
First edition hard back binding in publisher's original turquoise cloth covers, red title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9½'' x 6¼''. An important 'Nelson' study containing 246 surviving letters from Admiral Nelson to his wife published here in full for the first time. The letters cover the period from 1785 when the young Captain of HMS BOREAS fell in love and married Frances Herbert Nisbet on the island of Nevis, to their unfortunate and bitter parting in London in 1800. They continue on to Nelson's death five years later at Trafalgar, and end with Lady Nelson's death in 1831. After the breakdown of their marriage and the loss of her husband to Lady Hamilton, Frances retained her dignity and love for her husband, carefully treasuring up his letters that remained in her family until they where purchased by Lady Llangattock around the turn of the last century. Clarke and M'Arthur published extracts equal to about one-third in 1809, but in the main, together with Lady Nelson's letters to her husband, they remained unpublished until the appearance of this study on the 200th anniversary of Nelson's birth. This book was published in conjunction with The Navy Records Society in 1958 but contains 8 additional plates and 2 maps not to be found in the NRS edition. Contains frontispiece, (xxxii), 630 printed pages of text + 18 monochrome plates, 7 facsimiles, 2 family trees, 2 maps of the West Indies. Fine condition book in Very Good condition dust wrapper with light rubbing to the edges and corners, not price clipped, 42s. Nelson related newspaper clippings for the mid 1990's loosely inserted. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection. Member of the P.B.F.A.
