David Hutcheson became a steamboat owner in 1851, when he took over the Western Isles fleet of the George and James Burns shipping empire, of which he was the local manager. His business was the largest of the local operators and came to dominate the area totally, latterly in connection with the railways, but continuing until 1969 with direct services from Glasgow. David MacBrayne was a partner from 1851 in the firm and when the Hutchesons retired in 1879, David MacBrayne, at the age of sixty-five, took over the Company and renamed it.
