The Epic of Dunkirk (Multiple Signed x 9)

Chatterton, E. Keble [Edward Keble Chatterton (10 September 1878 - 31 December 1944) Lieutenant B. Beach R.N.V.R. (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve); T. C . Robinson; R. Hall; Bill Angles; J. W. Walker; Ian Cleff; J. H. Alldridge; S. S. Blimann; A. T. F. Griffin

(Book #ID 114731)

Published by Hurst and Blackett Limited, Paternoster House, London 1940. 1940.

Hard back binding in publisher's original blue cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back. 8vo. 8¾'' x 5½''. Edward Keble Chatterton was a sailor and prolific writer who is best known for non-fiction works. His voyages across the English Channel, to the Netherlands, around the Mediterranean and through the French canals led to many periodicals, magazines and books. Joining the R.N.V.R. at the outbreak of the First World War he commanded a motor launch flotilla, leaving the service as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1918 he was appointed to the Naval section of the Official History Committee, where he worked until 1922. Unquestionably one of the most important and vivid nautical authors of the past century using both first hand accounts from the people that were there at the time, and having the opportunity to access to official documents. Chatterton recorded the maritime history of Britain at its most momentous point of change, from sail to steam, from the advent of the submarine to the carrier. This account was at the time of publication the only book dealing with the naval and seafaring aspect of the withdrawal from Dunkirk of the British Expeditionary Force, it includes first hand information obtained from ship owners, and the officers themselves who took part in the evacuation along with official information. A valuable source for those interested with the naval and seafaring aspect of the withdrawal from Dunkirk, it is an authentic account of the coasters and cargo steamers, yachts and motor cruisers, sailing barges and lifeboats, excursion paddle vessels, destroyers and sloops, even dinghies, that took their part day after day, night after night, and effected what experts at the time had considered impossible. Contains 256 + iv pp with 31 monochrome photographs throughout. SIGNED with different colour ink by 9 participants, R.N.V.R. and Gunners to the front free end paper 'Lieutenant B. Beach R.N.V.R.' (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve); 'T. C . Robinson'; 'R. Hall '41'; Bill Angles 13th April 1941'; 'J. W. Walker'; 'Ian Cleff 14th May 1941'; 'J. H. Alldridge Gunner TI 15th September 1941'; 'S. S. Blimann 14th September 1941'; 'A. T. F. Griffin'. Very Good condition book in Good condition dust wrapper with chips and rubbing to the edges, corners and spine ends, not price clipped, 10/6 (War Costs).
