First edition hard back binding in publisher's original full dark brown shagreen, smooth spine decorated with the title, volume number and publisher's name in gilt, framed with double fillets and title in gilt on the front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Large 4to 12¾'' x 10¾''. Contains red and black printed title, (xvi), 367-1 pp printed on fine laid paper. First edition of the first volume published in a series of 4, and which constitutes one of the most important works on the subject in England. This work printed in 600 numbered copies, this one bearing the number 552. Illustrated with an original etching by Alick P. F. Ritchie as frontispiece SIGNED by the artist in pencil 'Alick P. F. Ritchie', and very many illustrations outside the text of paintings, drawings and photographs of horses reproduced in heliogravure. Rear hinge cracked, top of front hinge cracked, rubbing to the cover edges and corners.
