Contains frontispiece [xvi], triptych folding map opening to 13½'' 8½''; 648 pp; lvi appendix, 24 section large folding map opening to 34'' x 21''; 15 further etchings, 28 wood engravings to the text. Two small fox spots to to the title page, light rubbing to the covers and in Very Good clean and bright condition, really lovely copy. From the private library of Frank A. Wilson (Poet, Novelist, Artist and long term resident of Mauritius), with export licence label inside the front cover from Booksellers Chas. J. Sawyer, London, to his Kensington address, dated 3rd April, 1956. With author's presentation inscription to his granddaughter. SIGNED by the author to the second front end paper 'Josephine Crosfield - From her affectionate Grandfather - James Backhouse, March 12th, 1808.' Recently rebound uniform matching first edition hard back binding in half chestnut brown leather, raised bands, gilt lines, yellow ochre plain paper covered boards as original, twin morocco labels to the spines, page edges dyed red, hand sewn headbands, handmade end papers. Text: Volume I xv., [i]., 412 pp. Volume II 431 pp. Volume III 473 pp. Atlas: 4 pp., 58 fold-out maps and plates engraved by Adam, Blondeau, Fortier, Dorgez, and B. Tardieu. Comprising 35 views, including one colour plate, featuring islands, landscape cross sections, volcanoes, rivers, craters, waterfalls; 3 maps including two very large; the 1st the island of Reunion and the island of France [Mauritius], 2nd with the island of Reunion detailed. All housed in 20'' x 12'' blue-grey felt lined clam shell box in Arbelave buckram, gilt titled to the front board. Foxing to the title and contents pages of the atlas, beyond which the plates are clean and free from any tears or foxing, books in very near Fine condition. Member of the P.B.F.A.
