First edition hard back binding in publisher's original scarlet cloth covers, gilt lettering to the spine. 8vo 8'' x 5¼'' 292 pp. Though she enjoyed writing all her life, Duncan did not seek publication until her husband's serious illness. Still in Jamaica, in need of money and facing the prospect of widowhood, she submitted a novel to an agent in London, and, when it was accepted, revealed that she had completed six further manuscripts. They became the first volumes in 'My Friends' series, which eventually comprised 19 titles. 'My Friends the Miss Boyds [1959], was an immediate success. This copy [along with others in stock] was purchased from a relative of an employee of Macmillan's, where it has remained untouched and unopened for over 40 years. Corners sharp, firm and tight. Fine condition book, in Fine condition Virginia Smith illustrated panoramic dust wrapper, not price clipped 16s, with over price ticket of 21s, spine colours not faded, paper crisp and fresh, stunning copy.
